...finding your groove in 2018
07 August 2018
I read an intriguing thing the other day written by the brilliant and witty Scarlett Curtis, a British journalist and author. She wrote “…gen Z have lived through a terrorist crisis, a recession, a resurgence of the far right, a global mental health epidemic and the career of DJ Khaled…we have every right to be panicked and highly strung…”.
And it really got me thinking, we millennials are constantly being criticized by our predecessors however when they were my age, the Melbourne median house price was just under $100,000, there was no such thing as the internet or social media, perms and blue eyeshadow were all the rage and Frankie told everyone to just “relax”.
We now live in a world where the median house price in Melbourne alone is approx. $900,000.00, a failed real estate mogul is the current American president, natural and human disaster is a daily occurrence and the likes of David Bowie, Michael Jackson and George Michael are now singing in the stars.
Pardon me if we’re all feeling depressed and a little anxious.
Couple this anxiety with the rise of social media where every week someone is posting a snap of their breakfast or their engagement or jumping for joy in front of a house they just sold their soul for. This enormous pressure we feel whilst we drink our morning over caffeinated cold brewed, organic, low fat, beverage is a raging untamed beast that will only get worse over time.
I read a quote once that said “comparison is the thief of all joy” and I wholeheartedly believe this.
I am a perpetual slave to this process of posting where I am, what I am doing and what I am eating all too regularly. I post about my various holidays, gifts I’ve received from my significant other, selfies on the beach or on a date and the like. I wake up every morning and open my socials to see what the world has been up to whilst I slept. I check my phone every 30 minutes every day to see what people are up to, where they are, what they are eating and all the while making mental notes to do the same. Call me crazy but as you read this and pass judgment, you know deep down you are a slave to the exact same process albeit perhaps not as intense as me.
German spiritual teacher and author Eckhart Tolle says that we are currently living in a state of “ego”. He says “Pleasure is always derived from something outside you, whereas joy arises from within.” Basically, we have the power to find our own joy and no amount of #fitspo posts or unobtainable material can change that. I forget this on a daily basis but I am trying to do better, to be better.
Mum always says to me “worry about what you can control and don’t worry about what you can’t” however when you are intentionally surrounded and bombarded it’s sometimes easier said than done.
I am in no way a psychologist, therapist, specialist or any other kind of spiritual leader. I am a twenty something millennial just trying to get by in this crazy world. At a time where we have the tools to be closer, we are feeling further and further detached. I therefore think it is imperative that you take the opportunity to be still and chill and relax. Switch off from your socials, take the unnecessary pressure off and just do you.
I do not know all the handy tips to find your groove and take the gas off however I can only offer my own experiences and things I have learnt along the way. You see real, pure joy is found in stillness, if you just let it be.
Tip 1
TURN OFF YOUR PHONE!!! Believe it or not, life existed before we had mobile phones. I know it’s harder to believe in this life but I was on the cusp of the mobile phone evolution and I do remember the time before. Even if it’s just for an hour or even the rest of the night, turn it off, not on silent and just do you. Whether it’s to watch a film, read a book or to just sit down and chat to your family about their day, turn off the distraction and just be.
Tip 2
STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS!!! Yes we all do it in some way. There have been too many times I have looked at others achievements and felt helpless with my own. However in doing so I am not only belittling my achievements, I am forgetting them all together. Practice celebrating yourself and the things you do. We are all awesome in our own right and we can never ever forget this.
Tip 3
IT’S OK TO NOT BE OK… Another thing I’m sure we are all guilty of. Humans by nature are problem solvers, its how we evolved. Cold - discover fire. Hungry - eat a sheep. However this ingrained process can get the better of us when it comes to feelings. We are told to “cheer up” “get over it” “move on” in literature, songs and bumper stickers. With all the sadness in the world it’s easy to be apathetic or in a constant state of despair however with reframing it can get easier. A film I love called Inside Out teaches children young and old that it’s ok to feel sad. I personally love this notion and truly believe that if we just allow ourselves to feel and grieve we are more empowered to accept and let go of the sadness.
Tip 4
TALK…Perhaps the handiest of all yet the most difficult to do. Who talks anymore? We’re all texting, emojjing, emailing, blogging and listening to podcasts that we have forgotten how to just sit down and just talk. I am guilty of it. My best friend knows this for sure, she tried to call me to tell me she had gotten engaged and I didn’t take her call. She had to text me to relay the information for me to pick up the phone. I can remember being in high school and pacing the length of my room, laying on my bed with my feet in the air, talking on the phone about the day, homework, boys and so many other things with my friends. I cannot imagine myself doing that now. I wonder, am I terrible friend or a product of today’s society? Maybe, a little of both.
So there you have it folks, an intriguing insight into how my mind works and perhaps a few things you can recognise in yourself. I hope some of my handy tips for living this thing called life help you to navigate the world. I promise my next post will be a little lighter but I just had to talk about this and would absolutely love your feedback on this one!
Until next time, Eva xx

...weekends
06 June 2018
Ok so there's the obligatory stuff like ensuring you Instagram your smashed avo and soy latte with some hashtags along lines of #health #cleaneats etc. etc. But the question on everyone’s lips is ...what to do after next?
The standard question on a Friday afternoon when you and your work colleagues are trying to wind down the clock is “What are you up to this weekend?”
For those of us lucky enough to have the weekends off from work I feel we should not abuse this luxury, instead we should be making the most of this spreadsheet free time!
I personally feel as if the weekend is wasted if I don’t go on a walk or do something away from my bed. I know, I know I’m sounding like #heath again, but seriously getting outside and getting some fresh air when you work in an office all week really does you good.
So without further adieu, here are some fun things to do all year around that will keep you happy, healthy and busy over the weekend:
1. Go for a Walk - long or short it gets those natural endorphins pumping. If you're alone, you can give your bestie a call and catch up on all the wine induced things you did the night before at after work drinks. If you’re in a relationship you can catch up on what your partner did all week, whilst getting the pedometer up. If you have a dog or ferret, they’ll love you for getting them out and about!
2. Visit the Salon - we sometimes forget to indulge ourselves, after the array of bills are paid and the savings are banked, take a look at what you have left and see if you can nip into your local hairdressers and get a wash, trim, colour or whatever your heart desires. You'd be surprised the lift you and your hair will get from it.
3. Paint - if you're a paint by numbers gal like me or a full blown Picasso wannabe; pick up that brush, find a quiet spot and put brush to paper. You don't have to get it all done in one day but you can at least make a start.
4. Spring Clean - with our busy schedules sometimes we forget the little things like dusting, flipping our mattresses or even running the vac around. Spending a day clearing out old junk or going full ‘Monica cleaning mode’ will keep your place looking great and keep you and those around you healthy. I was about 12 when I found out what dust actually was and ever since then I’ve been a dust freak, removing it from my desk at work on a weekly basis. If you don’t know what it is by now, google it! It will get you up to Kmart pronto buying every kind of duster imaginable!
5. Spend time with your Family - If you live away from home or even if you live in the same house, sometimes it's hard to get that much needed family time. I live at home and it feels like during the week my parents and I are like passing ships. Take the time to sit and have a tea with your parentals, get a coffee with a sibling or have a scone at the local nursing home where your grandparents may be. It's always good to stay connected. Sometimes we take family for granted, knowing they'll always be there but like all of us, one day they won’t so make the most of the time you have with them.
6. Start a Blog -I know, as if this is not number 1 on my list. But seriously, try it. I’m still new to the blogging world, navigating my way though. Even if it's a personal one to begin with or one you create to discuss big issues, give it a go. Self reflection and evaluation is the best thing you can do. Instead of keeping that great idea in your head, write it down, type it up and you'd be surprised how satisfying it is. Even if it's an afternoon to jot some things down whilst you wait for the newest GOT episode to download, just try it, I can speak from experience, it really is great.
7. Bake something Yummy - We all try and do the healthy thing during the week eating like Pidgeons to fit into the clothes we've ordered from ASOS on our lunch break. But...we all need to indulge at some point because otherwise, what's the point?! Pull up a recipe online, or look into an old family cook book. Find something that involves chocolate and get that Kitchen Aid pumping. Everyone will love you for it and you'll need that stashed away choc chip brownie for the Monday morning pick me up with your strong flat white!
8. Go on a Mini-Break - As Bridgett Jones said “A mini break means true love". Now this may be true love with your significant other or it may mean with yourself or your friends. Either way, jump on air bnb and pick a place, jump in the car and set off for an adventure filled weekend. You can do this all year round and it doesn't have to cost a fortune. In the height of summer it could be down the coast to top up your "Bondi Sands Tan". In the dead of winter it could be up at the snow, attempting to look like a gazelle on the slopes!
9. Go out on the Town - Yes, how could I forget the big night out! We dream of that first sip of wine all the way up to Fri-yay. Saturday night is THE night to hit the city in your best get up with your contour and highlighter looking fierce, armed with you best friends by your side and some pre drinks in your belly, you're bound to have a night not to remember! Just keep it classy and make sure you have a glass of water by your bed for in the morning when you feel as if you've woken up in the Sahara Desert!
10. Dinner and Movie - The other end of the spectrum for a Saturday night. Again it's all basic stuff but how many times have you seen a trailer and thought ‘ooh that looks good I want to see that" and then months later you're watching the DVD at home with no overpriced but absolutely necessary movie goodies to go with. The charm of going to the movies and munching on a choc top should never go away. After you've had you're fil of popcorn and post mixed coke, you head to a yummy restaurant to undo all the good work of that walk you did in the morning…Ahh balance... Go with a friend, a lover or, dare I say it, by yourself. Either way, it’s a fun thing to do and another memory you'll have in the bank that doesn’t involve...WORK!
So there you have it, like I said, nothing new or complex, more a gentle reminder that you can use your weekends wisely and get the most out of them.
Have a killer weekend guys!

...Mood boards
18 January 2018
So, in line with jumping on the #newyearnewme bandwagon, I have decided to create a 2018 mood board to serve as a constant reminder of all the things I want to, achieve and remember this year. I’ve seen them plastered all over social media and Pinterest and I have to say, I’m inspired. Not only am I able to tap into my creative side, I’m actively engaging with my goals, making myself accountable with pretty pictures and words to live by.
I did a leadership course last year and it was heavily focused on S.M.A.R.T goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timed), essentially it helped you to shy away from making flippant dreamy goals and make more achievable and realistic goals that could be measured. This way you feel more of a sense of achievement and continue to reach your goals.
So, that being said here are a few of my goals for this year and how I have chosen to depict them:

So, that being said here are a few of my goals for this year and how I have chosen to depict them:
- Wellness – I injured my back last year and have been slowly trying to get back on my feet, by the end of Feb I’ll be back practicing yoga and Pilates.
- Paint – I am half way through an epic paint by numbers and am really keen to finish it before Christmas.
- Travel – I will be booking flights to the UK very soon to spend Christmas with my family.
- Bake – I think it’s always important to learn something new so I intend to learn how to bake macaroons that rival Ladurée and Zumbo!
- Blog – last but not least I intend to blog more regularly and keep the weekends filled with fun stuff to report back on.
...Wednesdays
10 January 2018
For those who know me personally, you've known exactly where I've been every Wednesday for the last 3 years.
Wednesdays in my life are reserved for 'date night'. Without fail every Wednesday Stathis and I make the commitment to each other to spend the night and on occasion the day together; and other than a couple of exceptions due to travel or illness we have not missed many. You see we agreed very early on in our relationship that we needed to commit a night to each other, to continue to keep the spark burning, to keep the butterflies fluttering and to keep things fresh and exciting. To dedicate 1 day a week to quality time together, each taking it in turns each week to find something new and fun to do in our beautiful city. We settled on Wednesday as it's the middle of the week and when you usually need a little pick me up to get you through to the weekend! Over the last 3 years we have done all sorts of things on these nights: iceskating, movies, dinners, picnics, moonlight cinemas, nights in cooking for each other, walks, late night Kmart trips, ice-cream runs and so much more!
Now you may think, Eva this is nothing unusual, but funnily enough I am surrounded by beautiful, strong and very happy couples of all ages who have often noted their wish to commit to a regular date night and stick to it knowing what Stathis and I do. Often work or other commitments get in the way and before you know it it's been months since you ate just the two of you, weeks since you put the phones down and talked to each other on a long walk or even years since you tried something new together.
Now in no way am I suggesting that a date every week is achievable for all, nor is it preferable for some, however the notion of commitment and making the time for one another should be. This overarching notion of commitment does not mean spending time after work sitting on the sofa and talking idly about the latest Trump mishap or Game of Thrones episode (not that this is a bad thing, he does keep the conversation flowing on a daily basis after all). But I mean real quality time with you significant other. Surprising them with tickets to a show after a shitty work week, making a reservation at their favourite restaurant after weeks of clean eats, asking them to come and walk/run off the Christmas pudge you know they feel conscious of. You see, in all of these acts you are committing to the maintenance of your relationship and to the happiness of your partner. You are expressing your love for them in so many other ways than just those three words. I love you can be found in "I'll cook tonight", "Your time to pick the movie" and "oh I really do like iceskating". Every date, big or small is saying I love you.
So enough of the deep stuff, I am in no way a qualified couples therapist nor a daytime talk show host, however I am a keen observer and listener and I absorb all that I see with a lot of thought and consideration. It helps me to form, I feel, informed and thoughtful opinions that I can then share with you and hope that they in any small way can help.
Stathis and I just celebrated 3 glorious years and so I'm still feeling all mushy so if you stopped reading before this I do understand! But in all seriousness, I do hope reading this has helped move you, inspire you and above all make you think.
So whats the crux of my fist blog of 2018? It is to spread the love, to encourage the lovers out there in the world to make that little extra commitment to their relationship, to make it work just that little bit better than it already does, to ignite the spark for those who feel complacent and to instil courage in those who think but do not act. I cannot stress enough the benefits of date night, of that pure commitment and all the rewards you reap from it. So, if you're struggling to come up with ideas or your need a little inspo, see below some of my top things I love to do on date night!
Enjoy and until next time, Eva x

- The ever classic dinner and a movie - Pick a movie out of the blue, something unexpected, choose a new place to eat, step out of your comfort zone, go on this journey together, share in the wonder of the new and unexpected and take something so simple and make it magic!
- The effortless hand in hand stroll - if the weather is nice (and by nice I mean its not raining!), inspire your lover to go for a walk with you, head off to the botanical gardens and wonder at the plethora of flora and fauna, walk to your local cafe to enjoy an evening cup of coco or even go for a midnight stroll in your local area and pick which houses you like and enjoy the little things like sharing in the bitter cold or the excitement of reaching your daily step count together.
- The simple night in - if your partner does most of the cooking in the house, surprise them with your culinary prowess and make them a meal. Turn off the telly and put down the phone, light some candles and get cooking! Whether it's and old favourite or something new, use this time to enjoy doing something for your partner whilst improving your skills in the kitchen. Mix things up and take dessert to bed, blow out the candles and enjoy!
- The lush bubble bath - Draw a bath, pour yourselves some wine, put on a chill playlist and get the face masks out! Sitting in the bath together, talking about your days and listening to each other so purely is such a wonderful thing. Taking this time to look after eachtoher together is just one of the little things I love in life!
- The "lets try something new" date - on our second date Stathis said he wanted us to do something we'd never done before, so he took me iceskating; however unbeknownst to Stathis, I had grown up iceskating regularly in England. So whilst I glided on the ice with the chilly wind in my hair, he clutched onto the sides for dear life trying with all his might not to fall flat on his face! It was the sweetest thing, he wanted so badly to try something new, to share a moment together and it ended up being something so much more, it was our first test together, to see how we could help each other and learn from each other, by the end of the date he was skating with ease with my nurturing hand in his; and after all that, he asked me to be his girlfriend and well, the rest is history!
Enjoy and until next time, Eva x
...Bali
In early September I was lucky enough to go to Bali with my partner and parents. It was our (Stathi and I) third trip there in 3 years and I’m sure it won’t be our last trip.
Because we’d been before, this trip was our opportunity to show my parents our version of Bali. As staunch Bali critics, they took some convincing to join us on our regular holiday there.
Finally we were able to settle on 2 weeks in fabulous Seminyak. Having stayed in Legian twice before, we wanted to be closer to “Eat Street” and all the other fabulous beach clubs and eateries that make this part of the island famous.
We arrived on a balmy Friday afternoon at the Courtyard Marriot after a breezy 6 hour flight. We were welcomed with complimentary drinks and a seat at their pool bar whilst our room was being prepared. Straight away I loved the vibe of the place. Cool tunes, a bustling pool with swim up bar and a large spacious sunbathing area filled with a variety of guests.
Our first night we went and explored our semi new surroundings. We walked along the beach breathing in all the wonderful aromas. After a while we stopped at one of our favourite restaurants call Fat Gajah, a renowned dumpling and noodle restaurant on the main strip. We indulged in mojitos and a variety of dumplings whilst making a plan of attack for when my parents arrived (3 days later).
Over the next few days we relaxed by the pool, strolled up to Beachwalk (shopping complex) and generally settled in to the area. Laying by the pool, reading our books and enjoying the sunshine (at the time Melbourne was in the single digits).
Mum and dad arrived on Monday afternoon cheerful and ready to roll. Once we got them settled we had a few drinks in the bar and set off in our hotel buggy to “Eat Street”. We took them to a new place called Batik, a fusion restaurant with a tantalizing menu!
A few cocktails some memorable moments and a whole lot of Vietnamese food later, we were strolling back in the evening breeze not to mention an impromptu rendition by the staff of Black Eyed Peas ‘Pump It’ for another diner’s birthday.
This habitual routine carried on for the rest of the time we were there, with mum and dad falling in love with Bali just as Stathis and I had before.
We took them to all our favourites, Potato Head for a sunset dinner where we played Uno lazing on the day bed and laughed until the sun went down. To bodyworks for a relaxing full body massage and flower bath and to Sea Circus for lunch and one of their famous coffee’s.
On this trip we were also lucky enough to try some new places as well such as Mrs Sippy, a trendy pool club a stone’s throw away from Potato Head, where you can, if you’re brave enough, dive off their multi level platform, sip on cocktails and enjoy excellent music with regular performances by international DJ’s.
We also visited what I think may be one of the best restaurants in Bali, called Barbacoa. We’d gone there on my partner Stathi’s recommendation after he salivated over an image of suckling pig slow roasted over 8 hours. He and my parents are big meat eaters so the chance to sample such a delicacy could not be passed up. I had succulent lamb cutlets as they enjoyed their pork. It was simply divine! We finished with full, happy bellies and just when we thought we could not eat another thing, the restaurant manager came over with chili chocolate truffles (homemade) as a thank you for visiting their establishment. He was more than happy to spend the next 20 minutes having a leisurely chat. You cannot pay for that kind of service. I felt that after this night, I had officially won mum and dad over with what Bali had to offer. The Balinese are kind and gentle people and this is the place for making memories with your loved ones.
The highlight however came on our second last day when we visited Uluwatu, the famous surfy town with cliff top bars and restaurants. We first visited the temple in the morning and basked in the picturesque views whilst receiving a guided tour with a young guy by the name of Nyorman. He talked to us about the various rituals they held there and gave us a brief history of the structure. Mum got friendly with the spider monkeys, who are said to be guardians of the Temple.
Once we’d taken in the sights we set off for a day at El Kabron (male goat), an exclusive cliff top club about 30 minutes away from the temple. I’d hired a day bed which included a complimentary glass of champagne and views beyond words. The Spanish style venue offered traditional tapas and delectable cocktails, for which we had many. An intimate space with a mix of young groups, honeymooners and hens groups. We soaked up the sun and witnessed the sunset for which it is famed. It was magical and my number 1 favourite thing from our holiday together.
Overall it was a fun, memorable and most of all relaxing trip. It felt so special to share this trip with my parents and show them around Bali. They are now already planning their next trip so they can do more of the great things Stathis and I have done in the 3 years we’ve been there.
So the point of all this? To share now with you, my readers, friends and followers, my list of top places to go in Bali. I hope I have swayed the naysayers and pumped up the lovers to book a trip, fly away and make the most of every minute!

...Bath time!
s the cold winter nights don’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon, I’ve been trying new and fun ways to pass the time.
A long time Lush lover, I’ve been heading there more and more to pick up some fun new bombs and creams to make my bath time a little extra special.
My top three pics would have to be: After my bath I then like to smother myself in the King of Skin which is a solid body butter that leaves skin feeling silky soft and nourished.
Now, aside from the joy of watching my favourite bath bombs swirl around creating glorious prisms, I also love the time I spend in the bath. I’ll either chuck on Netflix, read my book or even listen to my audio book. This 40 or so minutes of pure, uninterrupted solitary heaven is just the thing I think we all need to balance ourselves out so we have time to enjoy the little things we all love.
So I challenge my readers, take some time out for yourself. Soak away the winter nights or long Sunday afternoons with a good book and perhaps even a glass of red and enjoy – you deserve it!

...what I'm reading right now
So the tagline is slightly deceptive...
I have been reading, well more listening to audio books recently and wanted to share my experience with you all.
I've always been a hard copy book kind of girl, enjoying the time I have when I'm sitting reading on holiday or on a lazy Sunday afternoon, however I always feel like I never have time and am not on holiday as much as I'd like!
I changed roles at work last month which included a longer commute between sites (1 hour each way to be exact) and was sick of the same songs on the radio and the endless shuffle of my own personal music collection after day 3. I knew I needed something different to get me through the drive so I felt like I wasn't wasting my time.
A vlogger I love spoke about how much she liked listening to audio books in the bath and I thought I might give it a try.
I very quickly downloaded the Audible App which is an amazon app for audio books.
Within a few short hours I had downloaded my first book and was on my way to an epic lifestyle change!
I'm currently listening to A Walk in the Park by Jill Mansell, a light, fun novel set in Bath, England. You follow the story of Lara, a woman in her 30's along with her friends, family and a few big secrets along the way. This sweet story has had me gripped from the first chapter and I must say the soft tone of the readers voice, combined with the long drive has made me feel so happy about driving to and from work.
But you don't need a long drive to delve into an audio book. I went for a long walk on Saturday and whilst admiring the beautiful creek near my house, I carried on my adventure in bath. It was just lovely.
So if you feel like you need to use your time better, love a good read but find you don't have the time for the physical thing, try the app and see for yourself!
Also currently taking book recomenddations for my next download :)

...my obsession with pizza
So most of you who know me, know I am slightly obsessed with pizza!
Contrary to my beautiful image above, I am a margarita girl through and through. In my opinion it's the only way to eat pizza...with it's soft dough, rich tomato sauce, creamy buffalo mozzarella and a hint of fresh basil...simply delish!
I've listed below some of the best places, I think, to go in Melbourne for your next date night, birthday or dinner party.

...in the kitchen on a winters day
...my easy peasy granolaThere is nothing better on a cold winters day than baking a yummy treat for you and your family. I am a keen baker and am always looking to try new things.
My new favourite thing to make is granola. It's healthy, quick and easy and lasts for weeks. all you need is:
Preheat your oven to 180 degrees celcius. Place all dry ingredients into a glass bowl then mix in the maple syrup. Transfer the mixture to a large flat baking tray lined with baking paper and smooth out a thin layer. bake for 10-15 minutes or until slightly brown on top. Allow the mixture to cool and then begin breaking it up on the tray. Once cool I take a few handfuls with some fresh berries and greek yogurt and enjoy! |
...boozy hot cocoI feel a winters day/night is not complete without a soothing cup of hot coco. Recently I've been adding Baileys to my normal hot chocolate and I'm slightly addicted.
The small addition of the silky Irish cream drink with the rich chocolate makes for one delightful winter tipple... all you need is:
Simply measure your almond milk in your favourite mug (don't fill it to the top as you need to make room for the Baileys. Once measured, pour into a small non stick saucepan, spoon in your chocolate powder and begin whisking until smooth. Then as the milk comes to the boil, pour in the Baileys in and let it bubble for 3o seconds. Turn the heat off and pour the mixture back into the mug and enjoy. If you feel so inclined, add a couple of mini marshmallows for added goodness and total indulgence! |
